With the arrival of a new puppy, the first thing to do is to go to your pet store and buy the essentials, so we made a checklist for you and present what we consider to be the best alternatives.

Collar

Collars are important not only to keep your puppy safe but also for hanging your puppy ID and most important, an emergency contact in case he gets lost.

There are various types of collars:

Flat collar: The most common ones, that we see every day.

Head Collars: This collar goes around the puppy’s neck but also around their muzzle.

Choke Collars: This collar tightens the puppy's neck according to the tension that we put on the leash and is not recommended for fragile-necked breeds.

Martingale Collars: Good alternative to prevent that your dog escapes from the collar. It also tightens the puppy's neck according to the tension.

We're gonna strict to the standard dog collars and recommend the following:

Leash

A dog leash is an essential tool for every dog owner and if you don't want your puppy to go chasing squirrels until disappear from sight, you probably gonna need one of these.

The first times that you use a leash on your puppy, it will probably end up with him biting the leash. To prevent this behavior, try to introduce the leash before use it.

Let your puppy smell the leash in your hand (don't let him bite) and give him a treat. Repeat the process a few times. Next, attach the leash on the collar/harness a take a small walk inside the home and praise him with a treat. When you see that your puppy is getting more comfortable with the leash on, take him for a walk.

The leash will act as a bond between you and your puppy and after a few walks, your puppy will associate it with positive things.

There are a few types of dog leashes, but for now, we'll strict to the most common, the standard leashes and the retractable leashes.

They are both good choices, but based on our experience, we recommend the retractable ones. Besides getting more space to move, it might help to train your puppy to relieve himself outside, because some puppies are more "shy" and avoid doing that when they are so close to people.

These are our recommendations:

Identification Tag

These ID tags are very important and we strongly recommend that you use one on your puppy.

It looks cute to see a puppy with his name on a tag, but keep in mind that an address and a contact on the back of the ID tag can bring your puppy safe to home, in case he gets lost.

There are plenty of ID tag shapes, they all do the job, and there's also a variation that eliminates the jiggling of traditional tags:

Comfy Bed

A really nice bed is crucial, especially when raising a puppy since they can spend between 18 to 20 hours sleeping in the first months! After that, the average dog sleeps between 12 to 14 hours, which is more than a half-day. So your puppy deserves a really special place to claim as his own and taking naps during the day and night (even if you share your bed with him).

If you have a puppy, you have to choose if you want a temporary bed (adjusted for his current size) or a long term bed. To choose a right bed size, measure your dog from the snout to the base of the tail (or search his average size when adult) and the bed should be at least this long.

We recommend the following:

Harness

If you have a young puppy or a fragile-necked dog breed, you should consider using a harness. Most of the harness clip on the back, so they don't make pressure on the neck.

There's also an alternative for dogs who pull, the no-pull harness which moves the pressure from the back to the front, making the pulling less successful and after some time, your puppy will eventually stop pulling.
